How are equivalencies calculated?

If you want to check the result of our equivalence calculator or if you prefer to calculate your equivalence yourself, here's how it works.
To calculate the equivalent number of balls, refer to the equivalence table on the side (available for download).
  • Then, you must choose a new yarn quality that has the same gauge (same number of stitches and rows for a 10 cm square knitted in stockinette stitch).
  • Finally, you need to calculate the number of balls of yarn you'll need. An equivalent yarn doesn't necessarily have the same yardage. In this case, you need to multiply the total yardage of the pattern and divide by the yardage of the new ball (e.g., if you need 10 balls of Lambswool (134 m) 10 x 134 = 1340 m, and you want to knit with Phil Coton 3 (121 m), you divide 1340 m by 121 m = 11.07, which rounds up to 12 balls. So 10 balls of Lambswool = 12 balls of Phil Coton 3 for the knitting pattern).
